This work was fired for 9 days in a wood kiln. The kiln belongs to a wonderful woman named Joy Brown who has gorgeous bronze and wood fired works on display all around the world.

These pots are unglazed and are decorated strictly by the flame and the atmosphere in the kiln. Each pot is different than the next and each pot tells a story. Though I do fire glazed work more often at the pottery where I work I look forward to these effects from Joy’s kiln once a year. Each wood fired pot gets better with time and frequent use. I’ve been told that the Japanese see it as a great honor to “break in” a wood fired pot. I can testify to that. Wood fired pieces make dish washing a delight.

This little cup makes for a great tea bowl or dessert dish.
